CaMNHA GHANA

CAMNHA Ghana's Historic
1st In-Person Meeting & Outreach
A Landmark Moment for Midwives’ Psychosocial Well-Being Awareness
On International Workers' Day—May 1, 2026—the Canadian African Maternal and Newborn Health Association (CAMNHA) Ghana Branch convened  its first in person meeting through outreach engagement at the Shai-Osudoku District Hospital. This historic event brought mental health awareness and support directly to frontline healthcare workers (Midwives) who continued serving mothers and newborns even on a public holiday.

The session commenced with a comprehensive overview of CAMNHA's mandate, vision, and strategic direction in advancing maternal health and advocating for the psychosocial wellbeing of the midwives. The association was positioned as a bridge between formal mental health services and community-based care, with particular focus on maternal and reproductive mental health.
Why This Matters?
By engaging Midwives at the district level—where mental health resources are most limited—CAMNHA is building a cadre of mental health-aware frontline workers who can serve as first-responders to psychosocial needs in daily practice.

Choosing International Workers' Day sent a powerful message: healthcare professionals deserve recognition and support for their own mental health, just as they extend care to others.

This hybrid format (in-person + online) demonstrated CAMNHA's capacity as a modern, inclusive professional network that bridges geography and expands mental health conversation beyond physical boundaries.

The enthusiastic participation and positive reception positioned CAMNHA as a credible, caring, and community-centered association in Ghana's mental health landscape.

Building on this success, CAMNHA Ghana will:
                  • Formalize follow-up engagement with the Shai-Osudoku District Hospital
                  • Develop structured psychosocial well-being support programs for facility staff
                  • Extend a related outreach model to other district hospitals nationwide.
                  • Explore formal partnerships with hospital management and the Ghana Health Service
                  • Invite interested midwives and healthcare workers to join CAMNHA Ghana
                  • Assess impact through participant feedback mechanisms.

With appreciation...
In honor of International Workers' Day, CAMNHA distributed welfare packages to midwives on duty—a tangible expression of gratitude for healthcare professionals who continued serving despite the public holiday. This gesture demonstrated CAMNHA Ghana’s commitment to providing welfare through action, not just words.

The day's formal program concluded with sharing of refreshments among all participants, fostering camaraderie and networking between CAMNHA Ghana members, online participants, and facility staff.

A photography session captured the spirit of collaboration and purpose that defined this historic meeting — pictures used with permission.
